SASE & NAAAP (National Association of Asian American Professionals) in partnership with ACA (Asian Community Alliance), OCAPA (Ohio Chinese American Professional Association), and Daspo Productions present a kickoff to the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a first in the Asian Music Series!

SASE OSU: James Sun Event Recap Through the Eyes of the Students

SASE OSU was able to invite, fundraise, and bring James Sun to OSU to inspire students on “How to Write Your Own Success Story.” James was a Finalist on The Apprentice and is an extremely successful investor, entrepreneur, and tv/movie producer. Over 200 students, young professionals, entrepreneurs, and corporate managers attended the event. This blog summarizes the key points of the event through the eyes of the students and how they were inspired by the experience.

Jeff. S – Junior – Mechanical Engineering – Northwestern U.

“Throughout college I’ve been a typical Asian engineering student. Follow my parent’s lead by 1) studying hard to get good grades, and 2) finding a nice job. Fine by me -sure, it meant learning some time management and pulling all nighters but my work would pay off in terms of GPA. I met friends in various extracurricular groups and had a good time on weekends. After 3 years at Northwestern, I was settling into a routine of work, sleep and play.

I’m not kind of person that enjoys going to speaker events. Nor have I ever watched The Apprentice. However, James made me realize that I was missing an opportunity. Rather than choosing an easy path, like studying all the time I could pull of something more. If James could work full time, graduate with good grades and run an immensely profitable fund at the same time, surely I could accomplish more than a high GPA. In short, there are a few things he said that changed my perspective on a dime.

These are obvious points, but perhaps never implemented well.

Goals – Don’t just set the usual long term ones, you’ll just forget. Decide on something small to accomplish every single day.
Never, ever think “no” to yourself. It roadblocks entrepreneurs and leaders all the time.
Take risks. Why be the unhappy middle-aged corporate worker that holds onto a 6-figure salary only for security? Find a passion to pursue early on so you don’t get stuck in a rut later in life.”

“James Sun has truly been an inspiration for us all. Whether you’re in the realm of business, or just a college student with ideas, James gives you the motivation to follow your goals. One of the most important concepts from this meeting include taking risks. James talked about taking risks as an entrepreneur at a start-up company. Upon seeing the hardship he had to faced, I felt his struggles really diluted my personal issues. As the President of the undergraduate investment club, one issue that I constantly face is getting more people involved. James offered me this advice: “If you are passionate about something, all you need to do is find 2 people who are just as passionate. For each of those 2 people, they need to find 2 more people who share the same passions.” His statement turned something unfeasible to something that can be accomplished before I graduate. James’ appearance will always be remembered and his words will always be embodied.”

Jon L. – Senior – Chemical Engineering – Ohio State U.

“The James Sun event was very inspiring to me. James was an eloquent speaker and maintained a very persuasive and intriguing way of life. Hearing about his experience as an entrepreneur provided important information about how to successfully achieve one’s goals. I think he catalyzed the drive for many people in the audience to constantly identify and/or create opportunities to succeed, thus achieving the goal of the event labeled ‘How to write your own success story’.

Two major concepts stuck with me from this event. The first involves pursuing opportunity every day. It is so easy just to sit back and complete what you are supposed to every day, then return home from work and relax. Setting daily goals versus quarterly goals allows for a leverage (or domino) effect over time, and ultimately allows for one to activate his or her inner drive to achieve success. This leads into the second concept that James Sun has left with me, and that is to ‘Act as if..’. Try this concept out if you have not already, I promise you will experience a change in lifestyle unlike anything you have experienced before.”

SASE Collegiate Conference Call

SASE held its first ever National Collegiate Conference Call on April 5th to provide students with the opportunity to update the National Board members with the great work that has gone on and to connect student leaders with each other. The call was a great success and the Board members were impressed with all of the effort that has gone on and encourages each school to continue to come up with new and creative ways to provide useful and relevant programs for APA’s on campus.

Some examples of recent campus activity:

OSU – James Sun Event – Chapter raised over $6000 to bring in James Sun, highly successful entrepreneur and finalist on the Apprentice
Cornell – Dinner with the Professors event – highly successful event to connect students with key professors on campus in an informal setting.
UT – “Who Moved My Cheese” event with P&G to discuss how to deal with change in one’s life.
UC – Upcoming recruiting/info night with GE APA recruiters
MIT – Great kickoff meeting with Eric Liu, Director of P&G Gillette R&D, on APA’s in the Workforce and upcoming meeting with SASE Co-Founder Tom Fernandez on Leadership.

SASE National Team / P&G at MAASU Spring Conference

The SASE National Team was able to attend the MAASU Spring Conference on behalf of P&G. While the purpose of the trip was to recruit talented APA’s for P&G, the team was able to spread the word about SASE at the conference.

MAASU stands for the Midwest Asian American Student Union (MAASU) and is a 501C3 non-proft organization that “recognizes the needs of the APIA community by assisting schools with the establishment of APIA organizations, promoting leadership among students, addressing education needs and rights of the APIA community and developing a channel of communication among APIA student organizations in the Midwest.”

This year, MAASU was held at the Ohio State University and had over 700 student participants from over 18 schools. Schools traveled via charter bus from as far away as Oklahoma State University (over 15 hours!). The theme this year was “Make it Count,” based off of the 2010 census. The subthemes were Voice. Vision. Identity. and each workshop fit into one of these three subthemes.

The team was able to interact with students through the career fair and two workshops. The two workshops were on “Leveraging Your Strengths and Identity to Maximize Your Academic and Career Potential” and “Effectively Projecting Your Voice Through Your Resume.”

Overall, the team had a great time working with the students at MAASU and were thoroughly impressed with the amount of time, effort, and leadership that went into MAASU. The team would like to thank everyone who was part of the process and put their hard effort into making the conference happen.

OSU SASE: MOMO’s SOCIAL NIGHT! <3

On February 26, 2010, we had a huge social at MOMO’s, a bubble tea cafe which has games, karaoke, bowling, and pool. Since all our board members are part of other Asian associations, we decided to throw a big party with all the other major Asian associations as a final’s week pre-game, or an after-midterm break, which ever you like. We ended up with a big turn out, probably because of the FREE karaoke Lots of fun and LOTS of pictures! check them out on our facebook page.

OSU SASE: GE AVIATION

On January 21, 2009, SASE held an informational meeting with GE Aviation. GE recruiters came to our school to tell our members of the co-op and internship opportunities at General Electric Aviation. Resumes were accepted, and of course free drinks and pizza. We had over 100 students show up to listen to the GE recruiter’s informational session, and it was a great success.

SASE National: Recruiting Tips for PhD Students

Quoted from the lead PhD Recruiter for the Ohio State University Recruiting Team:

“For PhD candidates, it is easier to assess their leadership through their research. We usually probe if they can zoom in (details, technical mastery) and out (big pictures, strategic thinking) while talking about their projects. We also ask about their role on the project (“I” vs. “we”, “I” vs. “my advisor”), collaborations, source of research funding, participation on research grant writing, ideas on where the project can go after they graduate, ideas on the biggest challenges on their project.

Grad students are highly specialized and everyone has tons of research experience in very different ways. Our current approach allows us to probe them on the relatives same scale.

One additional way for PhD students to differentiate themselves is through activities outside of research (e.g. internships, leadership), that is a bonus.”

SASE National: UC Kickoff Meeting

On Feb. 25th SASE Celebrated it’s 6th chapter with the Kickoff Meeting for the University of Cincinnati. The event was a tremendous success with over 25 students ranging in majors from ME, ChemE, ISE, Bio and even Industrial Design. The SASE National Team was on hand to give UC SASE members a presentation on “How to Prepare for Your Future Career.” The presentation was focused on what steps students needed to take, now, in order to be better prepared for building their resume and the interviewing process. The SASE National Team also went over some of the different types of companies out there and how to best match your personality with the various companies out there during recruiting. Students found this particularly interesting and centered the 30+min Q&A on questions about the National Team member’s experiences picking companies and why we ultimately chose P&G. After all of the “business,” there was over an hours worth of networking and of course, free pizza sponsored by P&G.

We think it’s safe to say that UC SASE is off to a great start! Go Bearcats!

Cornell University: SASE at Asia Night — Success!

February 27th, 2010. Asia Night is one of the largest, student-led events at Cornell University, featuring most of the Asian/Asian American-interest groups on campus. The event hosts numerous booths, each set up by a student-run organization, and features such performances as lion dance, Korean drumming, Filipino coconut dances, Bhangra, Chinese dance troupes, and much more. This year, at the 5th Annual Asia Night, SASE Cornell set up a fantastic booth as the only professional organization at the event!

The group running Asia Night, Cornell Asian Pacific Islander Student Union (CAPSU), was kind enough to provide $25 of funding for materials. The night before the event, the executive board plus a few members got together to put together all of the materials we had been planning and designing for a few weeks. We had lots of fun.

Since our chapter’s funding has been extremely limited, we made ample use of Cornell’s “free” resources and were able to print off beautiful SASE General Information brochures designed by one of our very own executive board members, Ritu.

At the event itself, we had an extensive “Puzzle Challenge” which consisted of various analytical, spatial/visual, and slitherlink puzzles as well as a challenge against a SASE member at connect 5 on a Go board. The puzzles were mostly to promote our StrengthsFinder Workshop, scheduled to take place in April. We also had flyers for the workshop.

All in all the Asia Night booth was a great success and helped us spread the word about SASE as well as generate interest in our upcoming events. Next up, a general body meeting on Thursday, March 4, 2010!
